Assessment & Services

“Teaching reading is rocket science.”

Louisa Moats

Assessment of speech and language skills is specially tailored to each individual’s needs! At the preschool level, play activities are typically used to initiate the process. This provides the opportunity to assess communication skills such as eye-contact, speech clarity, vocabulary and sentence construction at early levels using science-based play and language scales. When indicated, formal test measures will be used. A comprehensive family history will be noted as together, we determine communication competence and needs.

For older children, adolescents and adults, each person is carefully and sensitively interviewed to determine their ‘sense of self’ as speakers, readers and writers. Informal speaking samples and reading/writing samples are collected to reflect authentic skills. Formal assessment measures are utilized when indicated to explore specific speech and language skills as part of a comprehensive evaluation. A detailed, written report is provided for all comprehensive assessments.

All evaluations utilize scientific, evidence-based methods to determine specific intervention goals and to indicate best intervention practices!

MV Language is an independent resource for families searching to support their child who is lagging in speech and language acquisition at the preschool level,  reading and writing acquisition in school from elementary to secondary levels, and who may be having difficulties with social language development. MV Language offers comprehensive speech-language assessment and intervention that considers the whole person. Formal and informal measures are used to determine a specific set of intervention goals and effective intervention strategies to achieve success in one-to-one sessions. Integration of language and executive functioning skills and critical thinking are emphasized to improve memory, organization and process abilities.

Adult learners can receive services that help them overcome their reading and writing difficulties. Also, adults may want to prepare for professional development that requires competency in literacy to move forward in their careers.

MV Language is a resource for EL learners who strive to be fluent, clear speakers of English for multiple purposes. Literacy is emphasized to improve opportunities for secondary study.

Telehealth sessions are offered when onsite services are not possible, for clients who reside in Massachusetts or New York State. They consist of dynamic one-to-one sessions utilizing the same materials and methodologies that are standard for in-person sessions.

“Working with Nancy Steinbock has changed my life in many positive ways. She has helped me master methods for reading, spelling, and decoding which have made me a more confident reader, writer and public speaker. In my work and my business, I apply what I've learned every day. As an adult with reading challenges, I can attest that it's never too late to make progress. Working with Nancy has made that progress possible for me.”
