Dyslexia

Dyslexia and Dysgraphia: what are they?
Dyslexia
"Dyslexia" is an oral-written language learning disability that is associated with language deficits from early childhood. Typically, a primary source of the problems is related to deficits in phonology (the sound structure of a language) and phonemic awareness (the individual awareness of sounds in speech and words). Problems with meaning elements (morphology) as well as speech-to-print (phonics) difficulties are often present.
Dysgraphia
Dysgraphia is a neurological condition that names an impairment of written expression through deficiencies in writing ability and fine motor skills. Characteristics include but are not limited to:
Poor handwriting ability that can include illegible writing, difficulty with executing letters in a consistent, regular form and physical problems with grip and writing strength and writing fluency.
Dysgraphia can be associated with dyslexia, and with chronic spelling errors
Issues with putting ideas to paper, such as using the wrong words
Difficulties with writing speed that interferes with composing and writing text simultaneously.
“We have a family member in elementary school who has severe dyslexia. The public school system has not been able to provide her the comprehensive therapy she needs to acquire language skills that are required for academic success. Nancy has been invaluable in helping this child to progress. She has effectively addressed several critical skills areas to build her knowledge, competence and confidence with her oral and written language. Nancy uses excellent materials that scientific research indicates are effective for treating children with dyslexia. .”
